Therapist vs. Coach
I am offering therapy sessions to California and Florida residents only, and coaching services to people (18+ years old) residing in all other states in the U.S and Canada. I’ve provided some information about my coaching practice below. I’m also happy to answer any further questions you might have through email or the contact form below.
Why do you only offer therapy sessions to California and Florida residents?
I currently hold licenses to practice therapy in California and Florida, meaning I am unable to offer LMFT services to residents in other U.S. states or Canada.
What Is Therapy vs. Coaching?
Therapy involves meeting with a licensed specialist trained in psychotherapy who can help diagnose and treat a mental health issue. In the US, therapists typically complete training through a master’s degree program, where they learn different psychology theories and methods. To get their license, therapists also agree to comply with ethical regulations, such as client-therapist confidentiality. Both federal and state boards mandate these regulations, with each state carrying its own specific laws.
Coaches, on the other hand, have a much broader definition. They can help you realize both professional or personal goals, and provide space for emotional self-discovery. They may have certifications related to coaching, but do not require any license to practice. As a result, follow different legal standards. For example, they can’t diagnose or treat mental health conditions.
Here is a quote from the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) that further explains the difference between coaching and therapy:
“Unlike the practice of psychotherapy, coaching is not regulated by the government. In other words, there are no state or federal laws nor regulations that govern coaching as a profession or define a scope of practice for those who offer coaching services. Any person can hang a shingle and label himself or herself as a coach. Coaching does not require a license, specific education, or experience.”
What services do you offer as a coach?
As a coach, I am able to help you establish both professional or personal goals, and provide space for emotional self-discovery. I can also help you set short-term and long-term objectives to help you actualize these goals, allowing you to better hold yourself accountable. This process looks different for every client, as I will use different methods and pull together various resources to help you achieve your dreams.
Here are some examples of coaching objectives:
-
Creating a better work-life balance
-
Enhancing your professional or personal relationships
-
Receiving support for major life changes — eg. moving, career, care-taking responsibilities
-
Achieving a goal that feels unattainable
-
Boosting your self-esteem
-
Increasing your decision-making skills
-
Discussing personal issues with an objective third party
I can also provide coaching services for topics related to my specialties, including perinatal preparation; life transitions for young adults; and sex and intimacy issues. Please note that I only offer coaching sessions to adults 18+ years old, no minors at this time.
Are coaching sessions confidential?
While confidentiality works similarly in both therapy and coaching sessions, the latter does not have to adhere to the strict guidelines that regulate psychotherapy. As a result, the privacy laws that apply to psychotherapy sessions do not apply to coaching sessions.
In some contexts, I may need to consult with other professionals to provide the best coaching for you and your goals. However, I will omit your name during these situations. If you have more questions about confidentiality in coaching, I’m happy to discuss them during an initial free 15-minute phone consultation or our first appointment.
Do therapy sessions vs. coaching sessions have any pricing differences?
Therapy and coaching sessions have the same rates. Please refer to the Rates and Insurance page for more information.
